Overall, I had a lot of fun playing Batman: Arkham Asylum in the 14 hours it took me to play through the story. Like I said though I think this is just personal tastes. It is pretty engaging throughout and the twist after the credits is pretty cool, but I just never could get into it like I have other games. The story was also not my favorite, but I must admit I am not a huge comic fan so I think this is where my disconnect with the story derives from. Hit x a bunch and occasionally reverse someone with y while throwing in kill moves and the occasional gadget. I do not know if it just me getting to it ten years late and playing that style in lots of other games or what, but I found toward the end it was repetitive. It allowed the cool combos of a regular character action game but made it a lot simpler for people to do. The combat style in this game has gone on to influence countless games that have come after it and at the time this came out was a revolutionary idea. ![]() Lastly Joker at the end is pretty much just fight a bunch of regular inmates while avoiding things that are thrown at you and then dragging him down for a few punches. I will say her boss fight was satisfying. Poison Ivy is also a tad different, but even in her case it is fight a bunch of regular inmates then throw your batarang at her when she opens. Croc is a tad different as you just have to escape his lair and then blow him up at the end, but even him you throw a batarang at as he charges you with a “sneak attack”. A lot of the other bosses are either charging dudes who you throw batarangs at or large quantities of regular enemies. I was not a huge fan of these sections, I felt they were a very odd change of pace. I do not know if you would the Scarecrow sections are technically boss fights, but I am going to include in here just for simplicity sake. The boss fights are one of the parts of the game that I found disappointing. You could either try and pick off the armed guards one at a time or go crazy and just take them all on (spoiler: you will probably die). Stealth is also very well done, normally I am not a big fan of stealth sections in games, but since in this one it is not forced I really enjoyed it. The exploration is pretty good, like I mentioned above the atmosphere and environment of the game is very well done. There are four main categories, exploration, stealth, boss fights and then just the regular Arkham style combat fights. The sound and visuals do a great job together of creating a cool creepy atmosphere for the player. I played on a 1070 with most the graphics maxed out and it ran well. ![]() Just like sound I am not much of a graphics person, the visuals in this game are very good though and I imagine back in 2009 they were cutting edge. The sound seems very good although I will admit I am not by any means a sound snob so as long as it is not terrible I will not really notice. I just finished playing through Batman: Arkham Asylum and while I thought it was a very competent and polished game I do not fully understand the critical acclaim it received back when it came out in 2009.įirst there is the sound and visuals, I will not talk on this much. ![]() With that short intro here goes, this is the first time I have ever tried anything like this, so it will most likely be incoherent and suck. Since I do not have a website or anything I figured I would just post them here if that is okay. So, I thought since I never get around to making videos I would try writing some shorter text reviews and see how I like that. I have been wanting to try making review/critique videos of older games I am playing for the first for a while, but I lack the proper set up to do it right and the video editing is daunting. ![]() Who invented ads on YouTube? Having seen both versions, I can happily attest that the 2-D experience is superior (brighter, clearer, and oddly more "immersive") which is handy for the home viewing market where 3-D continues to be little more than a headache.
